Our story

Grindon Young People’s Centre (GYPC) has been at the heart of the community since 1958. Originally known as Grindon Boys Club, the centre was built on a tradition of giving local young people a safe and supportive place to grow, learn and thrive. Over the years, we have evolved into an inclusive youth and community hub, welcoming children, young people and families from all walks of life.

For more than six decades, GYPC has provided opportunities that go far beyond leisure. Our charitable mission is to support and educate young people through positive activities that develop their physical, mental and social skills. Many generations have benefitted from the friendships, guidance and life skills gained within our walls – and today we continue to build on that proud legacy.

Our vision is simple: to be a vibrant youth and community centre that delivers inclusive, innovative and sustainable programmes and services, improving individual and community wellbeing for the future.

Thanks to the dedication of our trustees, staff and volunteers, we have earned the trust of our community. With a strong board bringing experience in leadership, financial management, health and safety, marketing, policy-making and strategic planning, we are well placed to keep growing.

The centre offers something for everyone – from school holiday programmes with hot meals for children, to parent and toddler groups, coffee mornings, line dancing, gentle exercise, volunteering opportunities and community events. We are proud to provide a safe space where people can connect, learn, and support one another.

We also continue to develop social prescribing activities, designed to help local people build confidence, improve wellbeing and reduce isolation. Our approach is shaped by regular conversations with residents, ensuring our services reflect the needs and aspirations of the community we serve.

Looking to the future, we remain committed to preserving the rich history of GYPC while embracing fresh ideas and opportunities.

With over 65 years behind us, we are excited about the years ahead – continuing to support our young people, strengthen our community, and inspire future generations.
